About Moon Rise & Set Times
Why moonrise times vary by location
Unlike sunrise which varies by longitude and latitude, moonrise times can differ significantly even between nearby cities. Your latitude, longitude, and the moon's current declination all factor into the calculation.
Does the moon rise every day?
Yes — the moon rises and sets every day, but approximately 50 minutes later than the day before. This is because the moon moves eastward in its orbit around Earth, requiring our planet to rotate an extra 50 minutes to "catch up" to the moon.
Best time to see the full moon
The full moon rises near sunset and sets near sunrise, making it visible all night. The best viewing is just after moonrise when it sits near the horizon and atmospheric effects make it appear larger and more orange.
Moon visibility and phase
The moon is most visible during full and gibbous phases. The new moon is invisible. Crescent moons are visible for a few hours after sunset (waxing) or before sunrise (waning). First and last quarter moons are visible for roughly half the night.
